August 27 (the following three letters written on one air letter)
Dear Grandma and Grandpa,
We went to Kenyatta and saw a giant monkey bar and we climbed it. Vicki climbed to the top and so did Milton.
Diane bought a sheepskin rug for 50 shillings. 14 cents equals one shilling. 50 shillings equal seven dollars.
Mom bought two big baskets, one for nine shillings and one for three shillings.
Love, Amy
Dear Grandma and Grandpa,
By the way I climbed to the top of the monkey bars too. They must have been 20 feet off the ground. There were also two big poles that were hooked onto the monkey bars on the top. They looked like two fireman poles, and that is just what we used them for. It sure was fun.
The plane ride over wasn't what I had expected. It was sickening! I mean it! Three-quarters of the time I felt sick. All the way over we flew above the clouds so there wasn't much of a view. I enjoyed the flight across the U.S. more than I did this flight.
The country around Nairobi is just like the country at home only greener.
We spent five days in Nairobi. Those were some of the worst days I ever spent.
The only good part about our stay in Nairobi was that we got to go to the Nairobi National Game Park. It was wonderful. We got to see lions, zebra, giraffe, gazelles, wildebeests, ostriches, and baboons. We didn't see any elephants, but I wasn't disappointed, everything else was so pretty.
We drove the 91 miles from Nairobi to Embu on the twenty third. The country side started out dry and turned green gradually. The country around here makes Nairobi look burnt. Everything is so green around here.
The house is just a little bit small but it has a wonderful view to the south. We can see a hill that's outside of Nairobi from the front room (When it's clear). I laid my sheep skin rug in front of the fireplace. It looks neat but it gets dirty.
I am doing fine with my correspondence course. The World Lit. is really great. I've go to go now so, so long.
Love, Diane
Dear Grandma and Grandpa,
How's your garden coming? Ours was all ready to eat when we got here. How's that for magic?
All the time we were in New York I wanted a tree to climb in. Well I finally got one and it's a dandy! We hung a tire swing from one branch and used the other end of the rope as a foot loop to get up in the top part.
Anthony, one of Milton's friends, found a chameleon. It happened this way. Milton and Anthony were climbing one of the fruit trees when Anthony cried, "A chameleon!" Milton said he thought it was a fruit at first. We or I took it out of the tree and put it in our rose bush. It stayed there about one day and then it left. He was a big one about nine inches from the tip of his tail to the tip of his nose. Mom and Dad and Diane want to go for a walk to see what's around, so I'll call it quits for now, besides I don't have any paper left.
Love, Vicki
